ORIGIN/HABITAT: From southern Florida southward to Cuba, Jamaica, and the
island of Hispaniola. A plant was reportedly found in the Fahkahatchee
Swamp at about 10 ft. (3 m). Although occurring in Cuba, we have been
unable to find any specific habitat information other than it grows in the
Sierra Maestra mountainous zone at 650-6500 ft. (200-1974 m). In Jamaica,
plants have been reported as occurring in the Holymount and Bellevue
districts, but habitat elevation was not reported, and in the Blue
Mountains at 5000 ft. (1520 m). On Hispaniola, collections have been made
in Haiti, but on details were reported. There have been collections from
numerous locations in the Dominican Republic, however, with collections
reported from near Constanza at 4100 ft. (1250 m), in the Cordillera
Central at 2600 ft. (800 m), and from several other locations without
specific details reported. Luer (1991) reported that this species is
widely distributed in the moist forests on all the large islands in the
Greater Antilles but is rare in the Fahkahatchee Swamp in Florida.
