Culture Notes from Donor: Parent plant: Temperature range W (70-90°F). The plant is grown mounted on a cork slab.
Comments: Hexadesmia sessilis is a native of low to mid altitudes in Venezuela. It can produce new pseudobulbs on top of the prior bulbs, but this does not seem to be a common occurrence with this species. A fine sketch of the plant and flowers is in "Orchids of Venezuela, an Illustrated Field Guide" by G.C.K. Dunsterville and Leslie A. Garay (1979), Harvard University.
Parent plant: Blooms in mid-spring, each inflorescence usually producing two or more miniature white flowers opening sequentially. Small plant.

The following information is based on the name of the plant provided by the donor, and assumes that the name is correct. If the plant has been misidentified, then the following information may not be correct.

ORIGIN/HABITAT: Brazil, Bolivia, Peru, Venezuela, and possibly Colombia.
Plants have also been reported from Mexico. In Venezuela, plants have been
found in the southern and southwestern states of Apure, Barinas, Bolivar,
and Tachira at 650-1950 ft. (200-600 m). They were found along the Río
Carrao growing as epiphytes in rather bright forest. In Peru, they were
collected (as S. reedii) growing as epiphytes in forest near Tingo Maria
in the Department of Huánuco. In Mexico, the plants are reported to grow
in the foothills of the Pacific slope and in the Balsas depression on
hillsides in open, dry woodlands or oak forest and on lava flows. Most
plants in the Mexican habitat are found at 1650-4600 ft. (5000-1400 m),
but some have been reported from as high as 5900 ft. (1800 m).
