ORIGIN/HABITAT: Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru. In Colombia, plants are found
in the Eastern Cordillera near Bogotá in the Department of Cundinamarca as
well as at locations in the Departments of Boyacá and Norte de Santander.
They are also found in the Province of Carchi in northern Ecuador and in
the Department of Cajamarca in central Peru. These plants grow as
terrestrials on rocky and grassy slopes where they may be fully exposed or
partially shaded. They have been reported at 6550-10,500 ft. (2000-3200
m), but plants are usually more abundant at 8200-8850 ft. (2500-2700 m).
The large, long-stemmed, pale-flowered form is found in the Eastern
Cordillera in Colombia. The smaller, short-stemmed, more colorful
variations occur from Colombia to Peru.
