ORIGIN/HABITAT: Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador, and Nicaragua. In Mexico, Lycaste deppei is found in the States of Chiapas and Veracruz. Except El Salvador, plants of this species are found on the slopes facing the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean. They normally grow as epiphytes in wet mountain forests at 3600-5600 ft. (1100-1700 m), but plants may sometimes be found growing on rocks. H. F. Oakeley (1991) reported that in the Mexican habitat, Lycaste deppei was found in damp forests usually growing about 10 ft. (3 m) up in 30 ft. (9 m) trees with their roots in moss and in dappled sun at midday. Oakeley indicated that these plants were not found in the extreme damp cloud forests, and that their habitat receives no rain through the winter. Consequently, the only moisture received comes from the morning dews and mist.
