ORIGIN/HABITAT: Widespread from the northwest Himalaya to southwest China
to Hainan Island and Hong Kong. Distribution extends southward through
Myanmar (Burma),Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam, and Malaya to Sumatra
and Java. In Malaya, plants are found from Perak northward. Plants
described as E. albidotomentosum have been reported as common in West Java
where they are found primarily as epiphytes on isolated and roadside trees
from near sea level to 3600 ft. (1100 m). Comber (2001) reported that E.
lasiopetala has been found on Sumatra from Aceh in the north to Lampung in
the south at elevations from quite low to 6900 ft. (2100 m). In Malaya,
plants identified as E. pubescens has been found from Perak northward, but
details were not given. In the Himalayan region, plants have been found in
Nepal, northeast India, Bhutan, Darjeeling, and Sikkim where they grow in
subtropical forests on river banks at (390-660 m). Although reported as
occurring in China to as far north as Hong Kong, we have been unable to
find details of habitat location, type, or elevation in that region.
Strangely enough, although numerous collections were reported by
Seidenfaden (1982 & 1992) in Thailand and Indochina, details of habitat
elevation were not given.
