ORIGIN/HABITAT: Africa. This orchid is found throughout most of tropical
Africa to as far south as the southern coast of South Africa. Plants grow
most often in woodland, but may sometimes be found in riverine forest, at
1950-5250 ft. (600-1600 m). I. & E. la Croix (1977) report, "We have seen
plants in Swaziland growing on rocks and epiphytically on Aloe arborescens
on an exposed hilltop where they must have endured a long, hot dry season,
although they would have received some protection by growing in a cleft of
the rock." Stewart (1996) reports that this is one of the most widespread
orchids in Kenya, being found from near sea level to about 9850 ft. ( 3000
m) on trees and rocks in most regions where the natural vegetation is
undisturbed, usually in situations where the plants receive bright
sunlight.
